Lives We're Honored to Serve
The Onyinye Project exists because every elder deserves to be seen, valued, and cared for. Here are a few of the inspiring individuals we have been privileged to support, each with a unique story that reflects the importance of compassion, community, and human dignity.
Ibe Patrick, 72
Widower | Enugu State, Nigeria

After losing his wife six years ago, Ibe Patrick now lives in a small room in his village with his daughter, who is also unwell. His greatest struggle is his failing eyesight. Years of untreated cataracts and glaucoma have left him nearly blind, and without the means to afford surgery, he can no longer farm or care for himself. He often survives on just one meal a day and sometimes eats only cold garri because he cannot safely cook. Walking has become difficult, and he depends on a stick, the kindness of neighbors, and the occasional support from his children. Living with high blood pressure and limited access to medication, his greatest hope is simple: "If I can see again, I can farm again. I don't want to be a burden to anyone."
Bridget Obasi, 80
Widow | Enugu State, Nigeria

For years, Mama Bridget Obasi lived alone in a small mud house after the loss of her husband. With no children and no family to care for her, she was left without regular food, medical care, or companionship. Frail and isolated, she was eventually discovered by a compassionate villager named Mr. Paul, who brought her into his own home seven years ago. Today, Mama Bridget lives with Mr. Paul and his family, where she has the safety of a roof over her head, regular meals, and caring companionship. Though she continues to struggle with arthritis, poor eyesight, and chronic pain, she remains deeply grateful for the kindness she has received. With a gentle smile, she says, "I thought I would die alone. God sent Paul to me. He is now my son."
Jude Enyeazu, 76
Widower | Enugu State, Nigeria

Once known throughout his village as a man of remarkable strength, Jude Enyeazu built his own home, farmed the land, and generously helped those around him. But after losing both his mother and his wife in the same year, his health began to decline, leaving him physically frail and unable to live the active life he once knew. Today, he lives alone in the home he built decades ago, relying on a walking stick and the occasional kindness of neighbors. With high blood pressure, chronic weakness, and limited access to regular meals, each day is a challenge. Reflecting on the life he once had, he quietly shares, "My hands that used to carry a bag of cement cannot even carry a cup now. Grief finished me."
Janet Ibe, 82
Widow | Enugu State, Nigeria

For many years, Mama Janet Ibe was lovingly cared for by her second son, a Catholic priest, who ensured she had food, medicine, and a safe place to live after the passing of her husband. When he passed away seven years ago, she lost not only her son but also the primary source of her care and support. Today, at 82 years old, Mama Janet often survives on just one meal a day, and on her most difficult days, she drinks only water because she is too weak to cook. The occasional kindness of neighbors helps sustain her, but she continues to hope for the compassion and assistance that will allow her to live her remaining years with dignity, comfort, and care.
Patrick Uchenwachukwu, 76
Farmer | Enugu State, Nigeria

For Patrick Uchenwachukwu, farming has always been both his livelihood and his only source of food. Having never worked in the formal sector, he has no pension or savings to rely on, and with no one available to help him work his land, each growing season has become increasingly difficult. Poor harvests often leave him with little food to eat and no income to purchase essential supplies. Despite these challenges, Mr. Patrick continues to tend his farm as best he can, hoping for the support that will help him maintain his independence and live with dignity in his later years.
Bridget Onwuka, 68
Bread Seller | Enugu State, Nigeria

At 68 years old, Bridget Onwuka has spent much of her life supporting herself through the small income she earns as a bread seller. Never married and with no children or close family to depend on, she faces each day alone while living with untreated arthritis, ulcers, and other chronic health conditions that she cannot afford to address. With no savings to fall back on, even a minor illness can leave her without income or the means to meet her daily needs. Despite the loneliness and uncertainty she endures, Bridget continues to persevere, holding onto hope that compassionate support will help restore her health, dignity, and sense of belonging.
The individuals featured here represent only a small number of the elderly men and women we are privileged to serve. Countless others are facing similar challenges every day. Learn more of their stories or join us in bringing hope, dignity, and compassionate care to those who need it most.
Their Stories Continue
